Around 1880 the land that now makes up Victoria Park was purchased by Council with a mind to the future needs and growth of the city. The land was fenced off, planted with trees and, for a number of years, a hay crop was taken from it. According to Horsey’s history of Kingston, “many citizens considered it a crazy idea” to have such a park so far “out on the commons”.
